FHE: Celebrating being a Child

Posted May 5th, 2009 by admin

This is a Family Home Evening plan that spiraled of the LDS Living FHE: Become Like a Child. We made it a shorter lesson, then some extra family game-playing time at the end.

The scripture reading passages all refer to Christ’s love of children, and as such they are most powerful when read by a child. If you have children who are not yet fluent readers, you can whisper a few words at a time to them, which they repeat in a louder voice.

  • Opening Prayer

  • Scripture reading:
  • Song – I am a Child of God
  • Scripture reading: Matthew 10:13-16 (We like taking turns each reading one verse when there are several verses to read)
  • Quick Activity: Write down Childlike Qualities Jesus would like
  • Discuss how to do act according to those qualities
  • Closing Prayer

Then, after this quick Family Home Evening, play several well-loved children’s games.

My daughters loved having some special game-playing time set aside, and eagerly prayed that we should all be good sports!

FHE: Preparing for General Conference

Posted March 31st, 2009 by admin

Our Family Home Evening the Monday before General Conference focused on getting the girls and myself prepared for watching General Conference.

  • Start with a Prayer

  • Song, “We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet – Hymns #19″, found using the Interactive Music Player
  • Read this 2001 Sharing Time, but change the late President Hinkley’s name to our current President Thomas S. Monson.
  • A dot-to-dot of Joseph Smith keeps the kids busy while you are reading.
  • Show the children the Conference Carousel, and discuss different ideas of what the Prophet might say, and what they could do. For example, if the Prophet says to plant a garden, they could help with weeding. I had my girls wait to color the pictures during General Conference, but they could color them immediately if that works better for your family.
  • Show the kids their General Conference Notebooks, and discuss the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve. If your kids haven’t seen the First Presidency Song, watch with them, it’s a great way of learning about the General Authorities.
  • Remind the kids of the 16 Presidents of the Church
  • Sit in a circle and take turns reading the beginning few verses of Mosiah 2, discussing how King Benjamin held a general conference of his own.
  • Song, “The Prophet Said to Plant a Garden – Children’s Songbook #237″, found using the Interactive Music Player
  • End with a Prayer

This was a big success, and we really enjoyed playing a game of LDS Bingo afterwards – we saved the markers and boards for playing during General Conference! Keep the General Conference Notebook with the Bingo and the Carousel so you have them ready for watching General Conference.

Welcome to our world!

We are a family of 4 – a mom and 3 daughters, and we live on the North Shore of Massachusets.  The older two girls and I were baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on the weekend following Thanksgiving, 2008.

We are finding our way through the LDS world, and trying to find Family Home Evening ideas for our Monday nights.  We’ve used several of the LDS Living FHE lesson plans, but have also started compiling our own ideas.

We hope you enjoy our adventures in Family Home Evenings!
